Tanya Reinhart, a powerful voice has been lost

Tanya Reinhart, Israeli anti-apartheid activist, died suddenly of a stroke in New York last night, March 17, 2007. She was 63 years old.

Reinhart received her B.A. and M.A. in Philosophy and Comparative Literature from The Hebrew University in Jerusalem and later became a professor of linguistics at Tel Aviv University.

Reinhart’s thesis supervisor was Noam Chomsky. So it’s not hard to imagine her special interest on politics and media of the Middle East.

She was a strong supporter of the academic boycott of Israel, was a co-founder of the Coalition of Women for Peace, and author of many articles and books, including:Israel/Palestine: How to End the War of 1948

In this book, Reinhart delves into the root causes of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict, exposes the ways in which Israel has systematically worked to undermine the Oslo peace agreements, and highlights the connections between the Israeli/Palestinian issue and the U.S. War on Terrorism.

Reinhart was a dedicated political and human rights activist, committed to a peaceful and just resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Dear friends, Yesterday we lost Tanya Reinhart.

She died in New York, a sudden death.

It's hardly possible to describe Tanya's fundamental contribution and significance for the field of linguistics. Tanya was a wonderful colleague, a challenging and at the same time most supportive advisor and mentor, and a most dedicated political and human rights activist.

The linguistics department at TAU and the cognitive program owe a great debt to Tanya. She was a crucial part of what we tried to build here for so many years. Her excellence was an inspiration to many of us.

We shall always remember Tanya. She was our friend. The best you could wish for.

Israeli soldiers occupying the area guarded the northern Hebron's mosque on behalf of the settlers.

The book tries to show that in 1948, the Zionist movement waged a war against the Palestinain people in order to implement its long term plans of ethnic cleansing (whereas Israeli historians, including 'new historians', claimed that the war was waged by the Arab world against the state of Israel in order to eliminate it and it resulted in expulsions of Palestinians). The Arab world tried to prevent this cleansing, but was too fragmented, self-centered and ineffective to stop the uprooting of half of Palestine's native population, the destruction of half of its villages and towns and the killing of thousands of its people.

TUC passes Palestine resolution

A new comprehensive plan formulated by officials at the Education and Defense Ministries will see high school students fill out questionnaires in an effort to examine their motivation to serve in the army, Ynet has learned. The surveys, to be handed out to grade 10-12 students,will look into teenagers' views on military service and their preferences regarding the types of service. The plan's objective is to identify hesitant students in an effort to boost the motivation to serve among such teens.

Whatever the fate of the captive soldier Gilad Shalit, the Israeli army's war in Gaza is not about him. As senior security analyst Alex Fishman reported, the army was preparing for an attack months earlier and was constantly pushing for it, with the goal of destroying the Hamas infrastructure and its government. The army initiated an escalation on June 8 when it assassinated Abu Samhadana, a senior appointee of the Hamas Government, and intensified its shelling of civilians in the Gaza Strip.

I only found out many hours later when we had returned to Jerusalem that Nablus had been closed that night and no one could leave or enter. This was the beginning of some of the most invasive sieges by Israel's military to implement ethnic cleansing. I have since learned that public records have been totally destroyed, ground into the dust by bulldozers, leaving thousands of Palestinians without any evidence of births and deaths or the precious travel documents that allow them to go outside and study or visit relatives. Old records documenting the history of generations of Palestinians from Nablus are gone too. All this to make them non-people, sub-human - without a past or present and certainly no future. How much more must the Palestinians endure in their caged existence before the world says this is enough and tells Israel to stop their relentless torture of a whole people?
